Chapter 29: Repaid

I unlocked the door.

The yarn bell jingled.

My father stood on the step and didn't come in.

"I'm sorry it's so early," he said. "I couldn't sleep. I didn't want to come when it was busy."

"Dad. You're supposed to stay out of crowds."

"It's six in the morning. You don't have a crowd."

"Give it half an hour."

He almost smiled.

I held the door open, and he came in slowly, leaning on the cane, and looked around.

The red stools. The duct-tape booth. The photo by the register. Marigold's purple name tag on the hook by my apron.

"So this is it," he said.

"This is it."

I sat him at the counter and turned on the coffee.

"Tea," he said. "They won't let me have coffee."

I made him tea and a slice of dry toast, cut in four, the way the housekeeper used to make it when I was sick.

He looked at it for a long time before he picked one up.

Arlo came down the kitchen stairs, saw who was at the counter, and stopped.

"Mr. Penhurst."

"Mr. Garroway." My father nodded at him. "I've read about you."
