Chapter 22: Struck

The old woman with the cane walked to the middle of the ring and struck the ground once.

"The council will sit," she said. "Now, at the stone, before the moon sets."

Nobody argued.

She turned to the Alpha, who had not moved since the stone split.

"You will stand aside from this circle," she said. "You do not speak, and you do not lead, until the council has heard what your son has said and what this woman has said."

"You have no right."

"The stone has spoken. Do you wish to argue with it?"

The Alpha looked at the crack in the rock.

Then he stepped back into the crowd, and the wolves around him moved away, one by one, until he stood in a gap of bare grass.

The old woman faced my mother.

"Rosa Corvino."

"Yes," Rosa said. Her voice was very small.

"You knew a daughter of this pack was moon-blooded, and you hid it from her for five years, and you spent her on a house and a seat. Is that true?"

"I did it for my family."

"Is it true?"

"It's true."

"Then your husband's seat as the pack's third is struck. The house you live in returns to the pack. Neither will be given back." She paused. "You may keep your name, because it is your daughter's."

My mother swayed.

The women who had once sat at her table turned their shoulders to her, one after another, and looked at the torches.
