Chapter 23: Expelled

The academic integrity panel met on Monday, in a paneled room on the third floor of the administration building.

Six faculty sat along one side of a long table. The dean sat in the middle.

My former adviser sat at the end, and he would not meet my eyes.

Giada came in last, in a navy dress and a cardigan, with her hair pulled back and no dimples at all.

"Ms. Corvino has accused you of presenting her thesis as your own," the dean said to her. "Do you wish to respond?"

"It's my work," Giada said. "She's my sister. She's jealous."

"Then let's look at it."

Tobias stood and passed the dean a drive and a binder.

"This is the submission file from the showcase," he said. "Its properties list the author as N. Corvino and the date as two years ago. The comments in the margin are from her undergraduate adviser."

The dean opened the laptop and read.

She read for a long time. Then she turned the screen to the rest of the panel.

"Ms. Corvino," she said to Giada. "Do you have an earlier draft of your own?"

"I had it on my laptop."

"May we see the laptop?"

Giada's hand tightened on her purse.

"It was stolen," she said.

Someone coughed.

"There is one more matter," the dean said. "The withdrawal of Ms. Nina Corvino's enrollment, sent from her student account the afternoon before registration."

I looked up.

"The university's records show that the login came from a dormitory network," she went on. "A student worker at the registrar's window has told us who asked her to say the screen was broken."
