Chapter 24: The Lab Steps
Giada's boxes hit the pavement and one of them split.
A dozen ring lights, three sweaters and a stack of pink flyers slid across the walk.
Students slowed to stare.
Nobody lifted a phone this time.
My mother crossed the grass in her good coat, quick and stiff.
"Giada. Get in the car."
"Where?" Giada said. "We don't have a house."
"We have your aunt's."
"Your aunt hates us."
"She will hate us in a spare room."
I stood on the lab steps with a coffee in my hand and Tobias a pace behind me.
I had meant to go in. My feet didn't move.
"You told me he was the strongest wolf in the pack," Giada said to Rosa. Her voice carried across the quad. "You told me to smile and take him. I did exactly what you said."
"I never said to ruin your sister."
"You said she was the easy one. You said she'd be fine."
"Giada, lower your voice."
"No!"
Giada stamped her foot, and a tear ran down her face, and for the first time in my life I saw my sister with nobody to perform for.
My mother turned.
She had seen me.
I watched her straighten her shoulders, and arrange her face, and start across the lawn.
Tobias shifted behind me.
"I'm here," he said.
"I know. Stay."
My mother stopped at the foot of the steps.
She looked older. Her hair was flat. The gold cross hung crooked at her throat.
"Nina," she said.
"Mom."
