The Ostatua closes on Mondays, and on the next one I told Aitor at breakfast that I was leaving until Tuesday morning.

I said it plainly, with my hands flat on the table.

He put down his fork.

"Where?"

"Out of town. With Mateo Salaverria."

Aitor didn't blink.

"Eleven o'clock, Rali."

"I'm not coming back at eleven."

My father stared into his plate.

Aitor looked at me for a long moment.

Then he picked up a pen and wrote something on the back of an envelope.

I saw him copy down a license plate number.

He did not touch me, and he did not stand up.

"Tuesday," he said. "I will have your keys ready."

I walked out the front door with my small bag, shaking, and Mateo was waiting at the curb in his truck.

His family's ranch lies beyond Grand View, an hour south of the highway.

The desert opens up there, and the sky comes all the way to the ground.

There is a low white house with a tin roof, and long sheds, and a thousand ewes on winter pasture, pale against the sage.

His mother stood on the porch in a man's coat and boots.

She was small and square, with iron hair and an eye that missed nothing.

"So you're Joseba's girl," she said. "You have your mother's mouth."
