Chapter 8: The Hold

Rali's POV

I went in by the kitchen door at five, with my dress rumpled and sagebrush in my hair, and found him waiting in the back stairwell.

The back stairs are narrow, a boarding house's servant stairs, with a bare bulb and a wall on either side.

Aitor stood on the third step with his hand on the rail.

"Where were you?"

"On a ridge," I said. "With a man. I had sex with him in his truck, and I enjoyed it, and I'll do it again."

His face did not change.

That was the thing about him.

He came down two steps and took my arm above the elbow.

It was the first time he had touched me since the pantry, and I had known it was coming for a week.

His grip was hot and exact, and it closed on the muscle until my fingers went numb.

"You'll tell me who he is."

"You know who he is. You offered him six thousand dollars."

"Seven," Aitor said. "He didn't take it. That's what worries me."

He pushed me back against the wall, not hard, not with any anger at all, and held me there with his body between me and the way out.

"Say you're sorry."

I was fifteen again for a moment, in Gorka's backyard in Meridian, with the sun on my shoulders.

He had made me practice in the grass until I cried.
