Mateo's POV
The man who came into my clinic on Wednesday at ten in the morning wore a pressed grey shirt and carried a manila envelope.
I was elbow deep in a Suffolk ewe with a prolapse, so I didn't stand up.
"Dr. Salaverria," he said. "Aitor Garmendia. I think you know my sister."
He said it pleasantly.
He stood at the edge of my surgery with his hands folded, and he did not look at the ewe, the blood on my arms or the smell.
In my line of work you learn to read an animal that is quiet because it is hurt.
I knew that quiet when I saw it on a man.
"I know Rali," I said. "She's not anyone's sister that I know of."
"On paper she is."
"Paper's cheap."
He smiled a little at that, and he set the envelope on my steel counter.
"I'm grateful for the lamb. I'm grateful you took her in when she was upset. There's six thousand dollars in there, for your trouble and your time."
"It comes with a clear understanding," Aitor said. "You won't see her again."
I finished the stitch.
I took off my gloves, washed my arms to the elbow, and dried them on a towel while he watched.
Then I picked up the envelope and weighed it in my hand.
"That's a lot of money for a lamb."
"It's a lot of money for a sheep vet," Aitor said. "Your lease on this building runs out in January. The landlord's a friend of Joseba's. People in this valley have long memories and short patience."
"Are you threatening my building?"
"I'm telling you how the valley works. You come from it. You know."
