Chapter 23: Slava

Baba Stana's table was set for the slava, three months late.

She had said that the saint did not mind, and that the family was not to argue.

It was the last week of March, and the ice was still grinding off the shore below the rock, and the whole Kralj family sat down under the long windows of the lake house kitchen, with bread and wheat and wine and a candle burning in a glass.

I sat on her right.

Xander sat on her left.

Ilija had brought his wife, and a toothpick he kept absently touching to his lip and putting away.

I had my pad on my knee.

It was shut.

I did not take it out.

I noticed it, about halfway through the soup.

I had not written down a word since the morning.

I had listened to Ilija's wife tell a long story about her sister's wedding, and to a cousin argue with an uncle about the price of diesel, and to Baba say, loudly, that the sarma was dry.

I had heard all of it.

I had not needed to put it anywhere.

I reached down and touched the cover of the pad, and left it where it was.

Across the table, Ilija caught my eye.
