Tobias drove me home at six, as he had promised.

Neither of us said much.

He had read the video once, standing in his kitchen in his shirt, and then he had put the phone face down on the counter.

"I can have it removed by noon," he said at the curb on Larch Street. "My lawyers know the platform. I'm asking before I do it."

"Do you want it removed?"

"I want you to have what you want."

"Leave it up."

He looked at me.

"It's a video of me holding your hand," I said. "I'm not ashamed of my hand."

"They're calling you the nurse and the boss."

"I am the nurse. You are the boss."

His mouth moved.

"Go inside," he said. "Your mother's pills."

My mother was awake, sitting in her chair by the window with her crossword and her phone, which my cousin had taught her to use.

"Two hundred and ninety thousand," she said, without looking up.

"Mom."

"I'm only reading the number. Your hair is a disgrace, go and wash it."

I took her pills out of the weekly box and counted them into her hand.

She swallowed them one at a time.

"Was he kind?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Then I don't need the number."

My first shift back on the ward started at eleven.

I had been off since the wedding, and the unit manager had asked me twice whether I felt ready.

I parked in the staff lot and sat in the car for a minute with my hands on the wheel.

Every phone I passed on the walk in seemed to be pointed at me.

At the ward doors, a security guard I had known for six years stepped out of his booth.

"Ms. Bradfield."

"Hi."

"I watched it." He cleared his throat. "My wife made me watch the first one too. She says you were right to leave. She says the new one is none of anyone's business."
