Chapter 13: Forty Hours
"You did it for the chair," I said.
My mother's face didn't change.
"I did it for the company, baby. It's the same thing."
"It isn't the same thing. I'm your daughter, and you sold me to a man with a loan shark."
"I picked a man who could be managed."
She said it the way she used to say I'd chosen the wrong coat.
The lead director stood up. He was seventy-one, and I had never seen him stand so slowly.
"Diane, I have known you for thirty years," he said. "I move that the chair be suspended for cause, effective now."
"Second," said the director who had taught me chess.
My mother looked down the table at all of them, one face at a time.
"Then call the owners," she said. "Every shareholder, every employee with stock. Friday. Let them decide whether I'm a villain."
"Diane."
"Walter wrote it that way. The owners can overrule the board." She smiled, and it was gentle and terrible. "They know me. I have sent flowers to every one of their funerals."
Nobody answered her.
"All in favor of the suspension?"
Six hands went up.
The seventh stayed on the table. It belonged to a white-haired man who looked at his knuckles and wouldn't raise it.
"Then it's six to one," said the lead director, "and the owners meet Friday at nine."
My mother capped her silver pen and put it in her purse.
She came around the table and stopped in front of me.
She lifted her hand toward my hair, the way she had done a thousand times.
