Chapter 15: Tea
My mother looked at the open safe, and then she looked at the letter in my lap.
She didn't drop the tray.
She walked across the study and set it on my father's desk, and she straightened a cup by its handle.
"Brice, honey," she said. "Would you give us the room?"
He didn't move.
"Wait in the hall, Kincade," I said.
His eyes found mine, and I gave him the smallest nod.
He went out, and he left the door open one hand's width, and I heard him lean on the wall outside.
My mother sat down in the leather chair across the desk, where my father's partners used to sit.
"He wrote you a letter," she said.
"Yes."
"Thirty-one years, and he wrote me nothing." She smoothed her skirt. "Not one line. I looked, in March. I wondered if he'd left me something."
"You opened the safe in March?"
"I tried." She smiled a little. "He changed the code and never told me. I should have known it was your birthday."
It was the first thing she'd said to me all day that sounded like the truth, and it made my stomach turn.
She poured the tea.
She poured mine, with milk and one sugar, exactly the way I took it.
"Now," my mother said. "Let me be practical, baby, because somebody has to be."
I didn't touch the cup.
"On Friday the owners will meet, and you may win or you may not. I'd rather neither of us find out." She folded her hands. "Here is what I'll do. I pay Preston's note tomorrow, from my own account. He signs a paper and the recordings disappear. Marissa goes to Lisbon for a year, and I'll see to it."
