Chapter 10: Parking Garage

The garage under the firm smelled of oil and wet concrete.

At ten o'clock the second level held four cars and one man.

Clark stood by a pillar in his work shirt with the sleeves rolled, unshaven, holding his car keys like something to hang onto.

I stopped ten feet away.

"Say it from there," I said.

"Mer."

"I came. That's what you get."

He nodded.

He had been crying, and he had stopped, and it had left his face blotchy.

"It wasn't eight months," he said.

I waited.

"It was three years." He said it to the floor. "Bree said eight, because eight sounded like something you could forgive. I let her say it."

"Three years."

"Since the Whitlow case."

"What case?"

"Her divorce. I wrote it for her. She said it was a bad marriage, a bad man. She said he scared her." He wiped his nose on his wrist. "She cried in my office. I told myself I was helping."

"You were married to me."

"I know."

"You came home to me for three years."

"I know."

"Who did you think you were?"

"I thought I was the man she needed," Clark said. "I thought nobody else had ever looked at her the way I did."

"And me?"

He lifted his eyes.

"I thought you didn't need anything."

I let the words stand there.

For ten years I had needed very little, and I had been proud of it.

I had also never once said so to the person I slept beside.

It did not excuse him.

It was only true.

"Why am I here, Clark?"

"Because yesterday she took my passport."

"What?"

"She said she'd keep it safe. We were going to leave after the vote, with the money. She had it all planned. Greece." He laughed, a bad sound. "She said it twice, like it was a spell. I asked for the passport back tonight and she said, 'Don't be silly, baby.'"
