Chapter 8: Fingerprints

When the directors had gone, I put the letterhead in a drawer and asked him straight.

"Hamish wrote with his right hand."

He took a long time to answer.

"The right one healed wrong," he said. "The tendons pulled. In the hospital they gave me a rubber ball and a pen and told me to learn the other hand or give up writing."

"You didn't mention it."

"I'd stopped noticing. I've been doing it for three years."

Skye snorted at the refrigerator, and I ignored her.

That night after he fell asleep on the couch, I went upstairs and opened the closet where I kept the wedding box.

Under the guest book was the card I had held at the altar.

It was cream paper, folded in half, with the printed vows on the front.

On the back, in blue ink, in a slanting right-handed scrawl I would have known anywhere, my husband had written one line.

Whatever happens out there, I'll always come home to you.

I sat down on the closet floor with it in both hands.

I thought of the voice on the phone at eleven at night.

I can't make it home.

Then I put the card back in the box and shut the lid, and I didn't say a word about it to the man on my couch.

On Monday, Bernadette called a special meeting of the board.

It was in the glass conference room on the fourth floor of the Lindmark Marine building, with the lake gray behind the windows.

I had held a seat at that table since my father died, and I'd attended exactly twice.

Skye came as my guest and took the chair against the wall.

The man I called my husband sat beside me in the suit that hung loose on him, with his cap on his knee.
