I didn't open it.
I put the envelope in the top drawer of my desk, under a box of red index cards, and closed the drawer.
Then I went downstairs to the plant floor, where a dryer was down and the night shift needed me to sign something.
It stayed in the drawer all summer.
I didn't forget it was there. I just had other things to do.
The baby learned to roll over, then to roll back, then to scream when she got stuck halfway.
Aaron went back to the federal building with a new pass and a new desk on the top floor.

In September, Silvio was sentenced to twelve years.
I didn't go. Ottavia did.

My birthday was the second Saturday.

"Thirty," she said at the side door, kissing both my cheeks. "Thirty is when it starts. Twenty-nine was a rehearsal."
"Twenty-nine was a lot of rehearsal."
