Chapter 6: The Driveway
On Monday morning Megan drove me home to get my work equipment.
I had a call with a client at two, and my monitor, my second drive and my good lamp were still in the back bedroom.
Cory's car wasn't in the driveway.
A small white sedan I didn't know was parked behind it, with a bag of groceries on the passenger seat.
Megan killed the engine.
"Whose car is that?"
"I don't know," I said.
The front door was unlocked.
I walked into my own kitchen and found Amber Ketter standing at the counter with an open cardboard box.
She was unpacking a toaster.
For a moment neither of us moved.
She wore leggings and a long sweater, and her hair was clipped back, and her other hand gripped the edge of the box.
"Melina," she said. "Oh my God. I thought you were still at your sister's."
"I am."
"Cory told me you'd be gone by now. He gave me a key last night." She reached into her pocket and held it out, then didn't seem to know what to do with it. "He said you'd agreed, and the house would be easier for everyone if I settled in before the baby."
Megan had come in behind me and stopped in the doorway.
I looked at the toaster.
It was a good one, red, with a bagel setting.
It was not mine.
"Put it down, please," I said.
Amber set it on the counter.
"I'm not trying to hurt you. I really thought you knew."
"Look at my face and tell me what you see."
