Chapter 5: What Heath's Wife Counted

Megan put Heath's wife in the chair nearest the stove and handed her a mug of tea.

She held it with both hands and didn't drink.

Her mascara had run and been wiped away, and she sat very straight in the chair.

"I left your house at seven," she said. "I told Heath I had a headache."

"What did he say?" I asked.

"That it made sense. That you were having a moment and the rest of us should be understanding."

She looked at the table.

"There were five of us standing around your dining room, Melina, and Cory was on the phone in the driveway. The table was bare. Your ring was in the middle of it."

Megan leaned against the counter and folded her arms.

"And Heath?"

"He looked at it and smiled for half a second." Her voice dropped. "Then he saw me watching, and he sighed and put his arm around me."

Nobody said anything.

The oven timer ticked.

"I toasted her," Heath's wife said. "I need you to hear that. I raised my glass to a baby I thought was your husband's, and I told her she could celebrate early."

"You didn't know about me."

"I knew he had a wife. I told myself it was a rough patch and you'd both agreed to something." She pressed her lips together. "Everybody said you had."

"Who's everybody?"

"Heath. Cory. The two others." She shook her head. "Heath told me that over the summer. He said Cory was in a hard place and we shouldn't ask questions."

I thought of the last Thanksgiving, and of Amber typing into her phone, and of Heath calling to ask whether I had room for one more chair.
