Chapter 4: The Hallway

Megan didn't buzz him up.

A neighbor did, two minutes later, and then there was a knock at the apartment door.

It was three knocks, evenly spaced, the way Cory always knocked when he wanted to sound reasonable.

Megan put a hand on the door.

"You don't have to open it."

"I know." I stood up. "I'm going out there."

"Then I'm coming out too."

We stepped into the hallway and she pulled the door shut behind us.

Cory stood under the corridor light in the shirt he had flown home in.

His nose was sunburned, and his gold ring caught the light.

For a second he looked like the man who had kissed my cheek and wheeled his suitcase out of our house.

"Melina." He held out both hands. "Thank God. Why wouldn't you pick up?"

"Because I watched the video."

"I know. I want to explain."

Two doors down, a woman opened hers to check the noise and then very slowly closed it again.

"Go ahead," I said.

He lowered his voice.

"Amber is someone from the office. Heath invited her because she didn't have plans, and everybody was drinking, and I made a stupid mistake. One mistake. It doesn't mean anything."

"The baby gift didn't look like one mistake."

"That was Heath's wife. She gets carried away."

"Whose baby were they toasting, Cory?"

He opened his mouth, shut it, and rubbed the back of his neck.

"That's complicated."

"It's a short answer."

"She's pregnant," he said. "It's early. I was going to tell you, in person, the right way."
