Chapter 8: Ginger Scones

I went out onto the sidewalk instead of waiting for her to come in.

Amber saw me and straightened up, and the pastry bag crackled in her hand.

"I'm sorry," she said at once. "I followed your sister's car from the house. I just wanted to talk, and I didn't know where else you'd be."

"You found the one place where I'm working."

"You posted the cafe's logo on Friday. I looked at the address."

I had.

I didn't say anything for a moment, and she took that as permission to keep going.

"I'm not here to fight. I brought these." She lifted the bag. "Ginger scones. I'm twelve weeks and it's the only thing I can keep down. I thought, maybe you're not eating either."

I stared at the bag.

She had no way of knowing she was right.

"Come inside," I said.

Thatcher looked up from the machine when we walked in.

He took in Amber, then me, and then he didn't ask a thing.

"I'm going to go check the back door," he said, which was a lie, because the back door was across the room and he took a very long route to it.

I sat at the counter, and Amber took the stool beside mine.

She put the bag between us.

Up close she looked younger than the woman in the video, with pale lips and a crease between her eyes that she probably didn't know about.
