Chapter 23: Signed and Read
The lawn did not breathe.
The board's chair looked at Mitchell over the table.
"Mr. Bradbury, you can't vote on your own removal."
"Then I'll withdraw," he said. "May I read something first?"
She nodded.
He took a folded page from his breast pocket and flattened it on the stand.
It was handwritten, in blue ink, with cross-outs.
I had never seen his real handwriting.
"I resign as Chief Executive of Bradbury Air Rescue, effective today," he read.
His voice shook, and he kept going.
"I put my name on twelve hundred pages a year without reading them. One of those pages killed a woman I should have been protecting."
He turned the sheet.
"I let one person read for me for fifteen years because it was easy, and I called that trust. It was laziness, and my wife paid for it."
He looked up at the board.
"I am not fit to run a company that sends helicopters to people on their worst night."
He looked up.
"I ask the board to appoint my mother as interim chief. She reads everything. Her eyesight is poor, and she does it anyway."
Constance made a sound that was nearly a laugh.
"I'll take any job the company gives me after that," Mitchell finished. "Starting in the mail room, with a stamp. I'll read every envelope. I'll learn what's in them. That's all."
The chair let the silence stand for a second.
"All in favor of accepting Mr. Bradbury's resignation and appointing Mrs. Constance Bradbury as interim chief?"
Eight hands went up.
Constance kept hers in her lap, to abstain, and then she put it over her mouth.
