Chapter 13: What I Never Said

Aubrey's POV

He was at my door at ten past four.

I heard the van next door cough and settle, and then his feet on the outside stairs, slow, one at a time.

I opened the door in a sweater and pajama pants.

Max stood on the landing with no coat.

His face was gray in the light of the bulb.

"I took a cab," he said. "I should have called first."

"Come in."

He came in and looked at the room.

There was a bed, a kettle, a radiator, and my mother's cello on a stand by the window.

He sat down on the floor with his back against the wall.

He did not ask where else he should sit.

I put the kettle on and stood with my arms folded.

"Say it," I said. "What you saw."

"She was at the piano. She played the Chopin. With both hands."

"And?"

"She stood up. She crossed the room. She was smiling." His voice cracked. "She was talking to herself about bar nine."

I nodded.

"The left hand figure."

"Yes."

"She plays that figure alone," I said. "Three times, then she tries it again."
