Chapter 17: Third Chair
The conductor of the Harbor Symphony received me on Monday morning in a rehearsal room that smelled of rosin and floor wax.
She was a small woman with white hair cut short, and she looked at me for a long time before she spoke.
"I wondered when you'd come," she said.
"I didn't know I could."
"Sit."
She took a folder out of the bottom drawer of her desk and opened it.
Inside was a single typed sheet on Symphony letterhead.
"This arrived in month three of your leave," she said. "It says you are resigning your chair for reasons of health, and that you ask not to be contacted."
I took it.
My name was typed at the bottom.
Above it was a signature, a bold slanting scrawl, with a looped capital G.
"I don't make a G like that," I said.
"I know. I've watched you sign contracts. That's why I kept the chair," she said.
"You kept it?"
"For two years. I telephoned your house the week the letter came. A woman answered. She said you were quite unwell and would not be taking calls." Her mouth tightened. "I thought it was odd. I thought it was a family matter. I should have driven to the house."
