Aubrey's POV
I held the envelope and was so angry that my hands shook.
"Eight days early," I said.
"Yes," he said.
"Eight days early, with no conditions, handed to me under a stage light."
"I thought you'd want it."
"I wanted it for four years," I said. "I wanted you to sign it the first time. And now you're handing it over because you finally decided to, and you picked the day, and you picked the hour, and I'm supposed to say thank you."
Max went white.
"That isn't what..." he said.
"It's what you do. You decide, and I'm grateful. You did it with the merger and you did it with the bell and you did it just now."
"Then I'll take it back," he said.
"Don't you dare."
He stopped with his hand half out.
I took a long breath.
I was crying, which I hated, and I wiped my eyes with the heel of my hand.
