Chapter 5: Terms
Lena tore the check in half in front of sixty cameras.
She tore it again, and the pieces dropped on Donald Dunning's polished shoes.
"My silence isn't for sale," she said.
"You will regret this," Donald said, very quietly.
"I regretted six years of it already."
She picked up her phone from the cameraman, walked up the aisle and out of the staff door.
Behind her, somebody in the press room started clapping.
By noon the video had two million views.
By dinner the Wolves' account had deleted its post about Mrs. Telford being unwell, and a sports channel had put Stanton's face on the screen with a single word underneath. Benched.
Susanna closed Harbor Ice early and told the whole front desk that anyone who said the name Telford before Friday would clean the Zamboni with a toothbrush.
Lena did not cry in front of anyone.
At eleven that night she sat on the bench in the empty rink with her old goalie pads in her lap.
Susanna had dug them out of the office closet.
They smelled like leather and cold and nine years of her life.
"Just put them on," Susanna had said, and left her alone.
She buckled the left pad on first.
The right strap was stiff with age.
She was still working at it when the side door banged.
"You always did that buckle wrong."
Beck Rylander stood in the doorway in a black hoodie, carrying a bag of pucks.
"How did you get in?" Lena said. "The rink's closed."
"Your sister let me in. She told me if I touched anything she'd put me through the boards."
