Chapter 14: The Long Table

Alberto Galli sat at the head of the table with his cane hooked on the arm of his chair.

The capos sat along both sides. Tommaso was on his father's right, and Vittoria was on his left, with a folder squared in front of her.

There was no chair for me.

I stood at the foot of the table and waited.

"Sit," Alberto said.

A capo at the end pushed back the empty chair beside him, and I took it. Every man there watched me do it.

"This is a family table," Alberto said. "Tonight it is also a question. My son's wife has been seen in a Montanari house. She has said things to the lawyer that I want said in front of me."

"I've said them to Vittoria's face," I said. "I'll say them to yours."

A man across from me snorted.

Alberto lifted two fingers, and the snort stopped.

"Speak."

I put the file on the table and opened it to the lab page.

"Five months ago I woke up in the Alder Hotel and couldn't remember the night. I went to the emergency room myself. The doctor ran my blood. She found a prescription sedative, and she wrote that it was not mine."

The room stayed quiet.

"She told my husband that at the nurses' station. A release with my signature on it went to Neri and Associates the next day. I never signed it."

"She's lying," someone muttered.

"The doctor will say it under oath," I said.

Vittoria opened her folder.

"May I?" she asked Alberto, in the gentle voice. He nodded.

"Don Galli, Elisa is grieving," she said. "Nobody in this room wants to add to it. But the record she's holding proves she took a drug. It doesn't prove who gave it to her. A woman drinking alone in hotel bars can say anything came from anyone."
