Chapter 16: The Council Turns
Greywater Hall at dusk was lit by the same two hundred candles, and this time nobody smiled at me.
We came in with the oilcloth packet, and with Maud on Bram's arm.
Behind us the Stonefell wolves carried Elspeth in a litter, wrapped to the chin.
Torin walked in last between two council wardens.
His coat was muddy to the knee, and he held himself very straight.
The eldest did not wait for us to reach the table.
"The chapel keeper has sent word ahead," he said. "Maud. Count."
Maud stood on the dais steps with her shawl pushed back off her white plait.
"I have counted fourteen rows since sunrise," she said. "Seven men of the Warden's dug beside me. We opened every grave."
"A hundred and four. Men, women, children."
"Every skull is broken the same way, from behind, at the doorways. No one drowned. No one was poisoned."
A low sound went around the benches.
An elder in the front row put his face in his hands.
"The river was never poisoned," Maud said. "I tested the weir water myself, the week after. Ask any elder who sat in this hall and called for the rope."
Bram laid Corwin's packet on the table.
"The Ravenhold beta has chosen to give evidence," he said. "Under the council's protection."
The eldest broke the seal himself.
He read the first page.
Then he read it aloud, because the hall had begun to shout for it.
*To Corwin. Take thirty to the Aldane hall at moonset. No survivors at the doors. Burn the stores. I will be at the river. T. Harrow.*
