Chapter 18: Elspeth's Gift
Hesper's POV
Elspeth woke at noon in the Stonefell tower with a hot brick at her feet and a bowl of mutton broth beside her.
I sat on the end of the bed with my palms in clean linen.
Bram sat in the window with his arm bound to the elbow, saying nothing.
The healer stood at the door, arms folded, glaring at all three of us.
"She will live," said the healer. "Hear that? Live."
"I thought," Elspeth said slowly, "that I had a week."
"You had a cold room, a thin diet and a man who told you it was your wolf that was killing you."
The healer came and put the back of her hand against Elspeth's cheek.
"Wolfless women live to eighty in the south. They eat meat and keep warm. Who fed you nothing but broth?"
Elspeth looked at the bowl.
"Torin," she said. "He said meat would sicken me."
Nobody said anything.
I thought of the trays I had carried up to her bed, with their little pots of broth and dry toast.
I had been proud of those trays.
"He kept you thin," I said.
"He kept me needing," said Elspeth.
She lay still for a long moment with her hands on the quilt.
Then she turned her head and looked at me, and her eyes were not frightened any more.
"I have something to say, and I want you to let me finish."
"All right."
"For two months I slept in your bed and told myself you were being generous. I thought, she doesn't mind. She must not mind. And you were being used, and I was being used, and I was too grateful to look."
