Chapter 15: The Card Table
Domenico's POV
On Fridays my father plays briscola with four uncles at a card table in his study, and in eleven years nobody has interrupted.
I stood in his driveway for a quarter of an hour with the carbon in my inside pocket.
Pietro sat on the hood of a parked sedan, eating a pear.
"It settled at midnight," Pietro said. "Lucia read the roll out loud in the bakery. Twenty-two men owe fifty dollars each."
"Congratulations."
"Six hundred apiece," Pietro said. "I don't feel like I won anything."
He took a napkin from his pocket and uncapped a pen with his teeth.
"Look," he said. "Three lines. If she gives the ring back, Papa keeps all of Halsted."
"I know," I said.
"If we end it, the Vitales get all of Halsted," Pietro said. "We won't, so that's out."
"Yes," I said.
"If she stays, a third goes into the trust on the wedding day, and Papa keeps two thirds," Pietro said.
"So Papa never loses a single thing unless she stays."
