Chapter 16: The Barn
The old barn held about two hundred people, and every one of them was eating.
Strings of bulbs hung from the rafters.
The long plank tables ran the length of the floor, covered in white paper, with roasts and hot dishes and pies down the middle.
The juice co-op had come, and the neighbors, and the pastor, and the crew in clean shirts with their hair wet.
My mother sat at the head with my stepfather, glowing.
I sat between Kasper and Eero, and Ansel sat across from me.
He didn't eat.
Neither did I.
At eight the fiddler stopped, and the drunk neighbor in the corduroy jacket banged a spoon on a pot.
"Tradition!" he bawled. "The Tollefson boy tells it!"
Soren got to his feet at the head of the second table.
He wore a clean gray vest and a white shirt, and he had combed his hair.
He smiled at the room, and the room smiled back.
"Seventeen years ago this month," Soren said, "my brothers and I were out on that dike."
Nobody coughed.
"A boy went into the bog. I was twelve. The water was over our heads, and the vines were thick as rope."
He said it well.
He had said it every year since he was twelve.
"When we went in, I thought that was the end of me."
