Chapter 20: The Gathering

The Hall of the Nine Sects had a ceiling forty feet high and a floor of white marble.

Ja-heon watched it from the gallery behind a pillar, in a serving man's grey coat, with a tray of cups in his hands.

A porter's wife had put the tray there.

Below him the sects sat in a great horseshoe by banner, nine leaders in nine colors with their elders behind them.

At the open end, on the dais under the Alliance's iron-grey sun, sat Dam Cheol-ho.

He wore his plain layman's robe.

He turned his prayer beads one by one and smiled at everyone who looked at him.

Hong Gang-mun stood behind his chair with his arms crossed and his face carved out of wood.

Seon-woo walked in alone.

His thirty disciples waited outside.

He wore white and jade, with his hair high in the crane pin.

Not one person in that hall would have guessed that he had begged for an order eight hours ago.

"Young friend!" said the Chief, rising with both hands out.

"Thank Heaven.

"We feared for you.

"Is it true they let you go?"

"No one let me go," Seon-woo said.

"I left."

He told it.

He laid it out without heat, the way he laid out everything.

He took the leather packet from his sleeve, with the beaded wax unbroken, and set it on the marble floor before the dais.
