Chapter 12: Walking Away Breathing

The Stonefall Alpha stopped at the edge of the ring and did not bow.

"Thora Haldane," he said. "Congratulations are in order."

I stayed on the stone.

"Thirty wolves is a lot of company for a congratulation."

"It's a courtesy escort." He smiled. "Pack law allows a rejected wolf's mate three days to withdraw the rejection, if her wolf wakes in that time. It woke the same night. My son withdraws his words. The bond stands, and the alliance stands with it."

"The alliance," I said.

"Greywater's Luna in Stonefall's house. It's the best offer you will ever get."

Behind him, thirty men in dark jackets shifted their weight.

None of them came any closer.

They didn't have to.

Brant stepped forward.

He had practiced it.

I could tell by how smoothly he said it.

"Thora. I was a fool on the lawn. I've been sick about it every hour since. I'm asking you to come home with me, as my mate, as my Luna."

I looked at him for a while.

"Say it again," I said.

"Say what?"

"What you said at the Claiming. Every word. Out loud, the way you said it then."

His smile went thin.

"That's not necessary."

"You wanted three hundred wolves to hear it. They're standing right here."

He glanced at his father.

His father gave him nothing.

"I reject you as my mate," Brant said, flat and low.

"Louder."

"I reject you as my mate."

"Now the rest."

"A woman who can't shift can't hold a pack."

"Good," I said. "That was the whole thing."

I stepped down off the stone, and the crowd opened in front of me without being asked.

I stopped in front of him, close enough to see the fine lines at his eyes.

"I held a pack for twenty-four years, Brant," I said. "I held three hundred wolves up with my own wolf. Every one of them has been standing on me since the day I was born."
