Chapter 16: Yoru's Message
Tomoya read it on the roof.
He went up the fire stairs with the phone in his fist, past the sixth-floor landing, and out through the heavy door into the wind.
The roof of the Tsubame building was a square of gravel and air-conditioning units, with a view of the Kanda rooftops going orange.
He sat down against a vent and opened the message.
It began without a greeting.
"I'm writing this in Hotaru's inbox because it's the only place you'll read it without me in the room."
"On the third day of onboarding, six years ago, you were first in the role-play."
"I'd already decided to hate you for it. I was twenty-three and I'd done a master's, and you were twenty-two and you didn't need one."
"At lunch I went down the east stairwell to eat alone. You were on the landing below me."
"You'd just put your phone away. I think it was your father. You didn't see me."
