Chapter 17: The Boardroom

The boardroom on the sixth floor of the mill had a walnut table forty feet long, and nine faces turned when Teddy walked in.

He wore the tuxedo jacket from the gala, over a plain white shirt, with the dark mark on his throat uncovered.

Anders stood at the head of the table.

"Mr. Gallagher is here at my invitation," he said. "He asked to speak. I'll defer to the chair."

The chair was an eighty-year-old woman in a gray suit, who had been on the board since before Anders was born.

She looked at Teddy over her glasses.

"You're the young man in the newspaper."

"Yes, ma'am," Teddy said.

"Say your piece. Briefly."

Kellan Voight rose with his smile in place.

"With respect, madam chair, this is a conduct hearing. The student is hardly a party."

"The student is the subject," said the old woman. "Sit down, Kellan."

He sat.

Teddy put his hands flat on the table, because they were shaking, and the wood was cool.

"My name is Teddy Gallagher," he said. "I'm twenty. I'm a sophomore. I tend bar three nights a week. You've all seen the photograph."

Nobody spoke.

"Here is what's true. Anders Holmgren paid my tuition in September, fourteen thousand six hundred dollars, and I let him. I asked him to put that mark on my neck, in a hallway, because I wanted everyone to know. Nobody forced me, bought me, or fooled me. I'm an adult, and I'm in love with him."
