Chapter 11: Above the Fold

Solveig's POV

I read the paper standing in the sitting room in one of his shirts.

The photograph was good.

It showed his sedan across from my house, and the engine's exhaust in the cold, and my own front door in the background with me on the step.

BILLIONAIRE HOTELIER WATCHED TILDEN'S WIFE.

Under it, a quote from an unnamed family friend.

She has been frightened for weeks.

I had not been frightened for a day of my life since Tuesday.

Declan stood in the bedroom doorway with his hair wet.

He read my face before I said anything.

"That's what the call was," I said. "Yesterday. When you told me nobody."

"Yes."

"You lied to me."

"Yes." He did not look away. "I didn't want to wake you with it."

"That isn't a reason."

"It isn't," he said. "It's what I did."

I folded the paper and put it on the table.

"You told me at the diner that you were outside my house. You said you wanted to see me walk out in daylight. That's all this is."

"It's true, and it looks terrible."

"Then next time you hand me the bad news first."

His shoulders came down.

"Next time," he said.

"Now get dressed. We're going downstairs."

There were nine of them in the lobby.

Two with cameras, one with a microphone, and the rest holding up phones.

The front desk manager had put herself between them and the elevators with her arms spread.

"Mrs. Tilden!" someone shouted. "Did you know Mr. Ferrow was watching your house?"

Declan started to answer.

I put my hand flat on his chest and stepped in front of him.

"Yes, I knew," I said. "I asked him to."

The lobby went quiet.

"On Tuesday morning my husband handed me divorce papers on our wedding anniversary. He'd spent the night at his girlfriend's father's house. I wanted someone outside my door while I packed."
