Chapter 17: The Letter
He cried for a long time.
When he stopped, he didn't apologize, and I loved him for that.
"It still makes people cry," he said.
"The buyer laughed."
"That counts."
He picked up my unfinished card, the one that said I'm so sorry on the front.
He put it in the inside pocket of his jacket, over his heart, and didn't say what he'd write in it.
That weekend was the best three days of my life.
On Friday he came to the press room at nine and stayed till two, feeding sheets.
On Saturday he sat on my kitchen counter while I made pancakes, reading the old man's cards out loud in a gruff voice until I burned three.
On Sunday he went to my dad's alone, because my dad asked him to, and came back with a container of leftover brats and a split one he'd been made to eat.
"He says I'm improving," Leon said.
"He says that to me about parallel parking."
On Monday at seven, Pip and I walked to the old man's office together.
She had the report. I had a list of things for the booth.
Leon was on the phone at the window with his back to us.
