Chapter 18: Torn

Leon was standing at the studio door.

I didn't know how long he'd been there.

He'd seen the hands. Every one of them, and mine last.

Nobody lowered theirs.

He looked at the pens laid down on the proofs, and at Pip, and at me.

"Big room," he said. "Tomorrow at nine. All sixty-two."

Then he walked away.

Pip let her hand drop and sat down hard on her stool.

"Well," she said. "I've never gone on strike before. Do we get snacks?"

Nobody laughed, but a couple of people almost did.

I went home and didn't sleep.

At nine the next morning the big room was fuller than I'd ever seen it.

Shipping stood along the back wall. Accounts sat in the front row with their arms folded.

Norma was there, in her camel coat, beside the window.

Next to her sat the heavy man in the grey suit with the Halvern lanyard.

He had a coffee and a leather folder, and he looked like he'd come to collect.

"I called him last night," Norma told the woman next to her, loud enough for the room. "Since my nephew's apparently having a crisis."
