Chapter 19: The Fee
Nobody in the big room said a word.
The Halvern man closed his leather folder.
"Ten days," he said again, pleasantly, and walked out with Norma behind him.
Sixty-one people looked at Leon.
He picked up the little pile of torn paper off the table and put it in his pocket.
"The company won't pay it," he said. "Go back to work. Pens up, Pip said. Press is on at ten."
He walked out the other door.
The press was on at ten.
We ran card eleven and card fourteen all day, and nobody said the word lawsuit, and everybody thought it.
On Wednesday the old man's office was dark at seven.
"He's not there," she said. "The HR director says Denver."
"Denver."
"Two days. Back Friday."
On Thursday night I stayed late at the press alone.
It was the first Thursday in six months I'd spent without him on purpose.
I didn't like what that told me.
I fed sheets until midnight, card six over and over, You don't have to forgive him for me to love you, until I couldn't read it anymore.
My dad called at eleven.
