Chapter 14: You Came Back
Roisin let go of the wall.
She walked down the hallway in her stocking feet and stopped in the dressing room doorway, right beside me.
She didn't take my hand.
Marguerite turned around and saw her.
All the polish went out of her face at once.
"Roisin," she said.
"Don't say it like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you've been practicing."
Cal sat down on the top stair behind us.
Roisin looked at her mother for a long time.
At the silver hair, the pearls, the nose that wasn't hers anymore.
"You had my nose," she said finally. "In the church picture. You had my exact nose."
"I had it fixed."
"You had it removed."
"I want you to listen to me," she said. "Both of you. There's a way through this where nobody gets hurt."
"Somebody already got hurt," Roisin said. "I was on the floor of my shop Monday."
"Let me finish."
"Go ahead. You never did."
Marguerite took a breath and folded her hands in front of her.
"I had a younger sister in Hartford," she said. "She died young. You could be her daughter."
