Chapter 19: The Cattaneo Table

Adriano lied twice in that little exam room.

The first lie was that he had known nothing about the pregnancy.

The second was that he had been with his father's lawyers all week.

Mr. Cattaneo listened to both, and then he said only: "Tonight, at my table. Come alone."

At eight o'clock I sat on his right hand in the Cattaneo dining room on East 72nd Street, in the plain black dress, and Leandro stood against the wall behind me.

Eight of Mr. Cattaneo's captains were seated down the long table.

Fiorella was not there. Nobody had asked for her.

Adriano sat at the foot, alone, with his hands on the cloth.

I laid a flat black drive beside Mr. Cattaneo's water glass.

"A copy, sir. The recording, the files and the frames from the photographer."

"Thank you." He did not touch it. "I will hear my son first."

Adriano stood.

He gave a speech, a good one, in the soft voice that had won every room he had ever walked into.

He said he had been weak and in love, and that Fiorella had manipulated him as she had manipulated all of us.

He said she had told him Mirella was unstable.

He said he had never taken a cent from the Roselli trust.

"The signed note for nine million dollars?" Mr. Cattaneo said.

"That was a business matter."

"On Sunday you stood in front of the Roselli captains and called a note on your brother-in-law's firm, with a pregnant woman at your side."
