Chapter 23: County Street

The bride's room on the second floor of the church on County Street still had the same window.

It still looked out on the back lot, and the same crack ran along the sill.

On the first Saturday of July, I stood in front of that window in a dress I had picked myself.

It was ivory crepe, plain, sleeveless, cut close at the waist, with a short train and no veil.

My mother had taken it in at the hem herself, kneeling on the floor with the pins in her mouth.

This time she had asked.

"Do you want it shorter?"

"No."

"Longer?" she said.

"Mama, it's perfect."

"I am asking," she said, around the pins, "because I should have asked."

I reached down and touched her hair.

She went on pinning.

Behind me, the door opened.

Lidia came in, in a long sage-colored dress with a ribbon under her bust, as wide as a barn door at seven months and radiant with it, carrying a bouquet of white hydrangea.

Ours.

The roots had taken.

My mother's yard had never looked so good.

"Don't move," she said. "You're crooked."

"I am not."

"Your left strap. Hold still." She tugged it a quarter inch. "There. You straightened every picture in the house for twenty-six years. It's my turn."
