Chapter 19: Black Ground

Lucinda's POV

The burned ground was still warm under my bare feet, a full day after I lit it.

Dusk had come down blue and cold over the sand break, and the black pines stood scorched and quiet on both sides.

Here and there an ember pulsed orange in the ash.

I had walked out onto it in my boots and nothing else but his flannel shirt.

Reuben stood at the edge of the black, with his coat in his hand, and watched me come back to him.

"You'll catch your death," he said.

"The ground's warm," I said.

"The air isn't."

"Then lie down and keep me warm."

I took his coat out of his hands and spread it on the ash.

It was a long brown canvas coat, lined with sheepskin, and it made a bed on the black ground.

"On your back," I said.

"Lucinda."

"On your back. Take your shirt off first."

He looked at me for a moment with his gray eyes bright in the dusk.

Then he stripped his shirt, and his belt, and his jeans, and lay down on the coat with the warm earth under it.

The cold air lifted the hair on his chest.

He was already hard, thick against his stomach, and the swell at the root of him stood dark and full.

I dropped his flannel and stepped out of my boots.

I knelt astride him, facing him, and put both palms flat on his chest.

"Hands," I said.

"Where?"

"In the ash. At your sides. Don't move them until I say."

His breath caught.

"You want me to."

"I want you to let me," I said. "All the way."

"Let you what?"

"You always hold yourself back so carefully. I want you to have nothing to do but feel it."

"I can do that," he said.

"Show me."

He pressed both hands flat to the black ground on either side of him, and I saw his fingers dig into the warm ash.

I leaned down and kissed him.

I kissed his mouth slowly, with my tongue, and the corner of his jaw, and the gray hair at his temple.

I kissed down his throat and bit lightly where the pulse beat.

He groaned.

"Stay still," I said.
