Chapter 21: The Cold Moon Run
The Cold Moon came up white over the pines on Christmas Eve.
The whole pack stood on the dike to watch the Alpha name his daughter.
Brant stood at the cedar gate in his tan coat with a bundle in his arms.
He had the choir voice on.
"Her name is Arla," he said, "for the Sooy bog, and for the man who made it."
A sound went along the dike, soft and wet.
I saw women wiping their eyes.
Maisie stood beside him in her gray coat with her hands clasped at her waist, pale and thin, and she did not look at me.
Arlo was my father's name.
Brant had borrowed it, and I felt it in my chest.
Reuben's fingers closed around mine.
We stood in the middle of the crowd, on the gravel inside the dike.
The pack had left a space around us that no one stepped into.
"Luce." Brant's voice carried across the heads. "I'd like you to hear this."
"I'm listening."
"The Mullica pack runs behind its Alpha. Anyone who wants to run behind me tonight is welcome. You are. The Stray is."
"That's generous," I said.
"I mean it."
"I know you do. That's how you got here."
