Chapter 6: Table for Eight

On Sunday afternoon my father and June held what they called a seating summit.

It took place on the back porch of the house on Waldburg Street, around a card table covered in place cards.

A hundred and forty names, in my handwriting, sat in neat stacks.

My father had brought out sweet tea and a plate of pecan sandies.

June had brought out a pencil and the face she wore when a child said her stomach hurt but it was really a test.

"Head table," she said. "Ivy, Troy, Dee, Troy's brother, your father and me."

"That's six," my father said.

"Six and the photographer."

"The photographer doesn't sit," Romy said.

She was leaning on the porch rail, drinking black coffee from her thermos.

She had her camera bag at her feet and a sunburn on the back of her neck.

"She sits when the toasts start," I said. "I'm not having you eat standing up."

"I eat standing up for a living."

"Not at my wedding."

Romy raised her thermos at me and didn't argue.

My father peered over his glasses at the chart.

"Troy asked about that," he said. "When we talked on the phone Friday."

"Asked about what?"

"He wants Romy at the head table, on your left." My father tapped a card. "Right next to you. He says he'll be on your right, and the photographer ought to have a chair where she can see your face."

I put down my sweet tea.

"He said that?"

"He said, so she doesn't miss anything."

"That's odd."

"I thought it was thoughtful," my father said mildly. "He's a thoughtful boy."

"It's very thoughtful," June said.

She did not look at me when she said it.

She looked at Romy, who was looking at the street.
