Chapter 21: Left Side
It took Fu until midnight to stop shaking.
The corridor outside Lecture Hall B had filled with people who wanted to thank him, and his mother had hugged him until his glasses bent.
Coach had shaken his hand twice.
The professor had said, quietly, "I will sign your Friday log with a different pen, Mr. Fu, in honour of the occasion."
Then he had walked away very fast.
Then it was over, and there was only the flat on Phoenix Lane, and the lamp, and the green notebook on the table.
Tang sat on the sofa in his socks with a mug of tea.
He had been watching Fu for a quarter of an hour without saying a word.
"What?" said Fu.
"Nothing. You've straightened that pen four times."
Fu looked down.
The pen was exactly parallel to the edge of the notebook.
He picked it up and put it down again.
"I'm not used to it being over."
"Over," said Tang. "Is it?"
"Mostly."
"Then I want to read it."
Fu did not ask what.
He had known for a month that this would come, and he had told himself he was ready.
He picked up the notebook, turned it over in his hands, and held it out.
"The back half," said Tang gently. "The part Cen read a page of."
"I want to read the rest, if you'll let me. I won't if you say no."
"You may," said Fu.
It was the hardest word he had said in a long time.
Tang took the book into his lap and opened it at the 20th of March.
He read slowly.
Fu sat down at the other end of the sofa and made himself keep still.
