On the first Sunday in November my mother went back to her own church.
She wore the church coat and the hat she had worn to marry Gunnar.
It was a good hat, she said, and he did not own it.
Nils drove us.
He parked on the street in front of the whole congregation, came around, and opened my door.
Then he took my hand on the sidewalk.
He did not look to see who was watching.
I looked.
It was a white clapboard church with a short steeple, and forty people stood on its steps in their coats.
Several of them turned.
The thing I had not been ready for was how many of them already knew.
I saw it in how their eyes slid off us.
A woman from my mother's church circle held a hymnal against her chest and did not say good morning.
A man I had known since I was nine looked at his shoes.
"He's been to see them," my mother said, under her breath.
