Chapter 23: Thanksgiving
Orlin had cooked a turkey the size of a boot, and he carried it to the table on the roasting pan with both hands.
The kitchen behind the shop smelled of sage and diesel.
There was a paper cloth over the oilcloth, with pilgrims on it.
Three plates, and a candle in a jelly jar that nobody had lit.
I put the pie in the middle of the table.
It came from the bakery in Hillsboro, in a box, with a sticker.
Orlin looked at the box, and at me, and at Levi, for a long time.
"Store pie," he said.
"We can't bake," Levi said.
"I can see that."
He ate two slices of it anyway, one before the turkey, which I counted as a kindness.
I sat across from Levi with my left hand flat on the paper cloth.
There was a pale band around the third finger, going brown at the edges.
On Tuesday I had put the ring in a padded envelope with one page of writing and mailed it to the house in Hays.
I'd written that I was sorry, and that it was mine.
That I hoped he would let somebody take care of him who was good at it.
