Chapter 22: The Red Zipper
My mother sat down.
The guests who hadn't left stayed in their chairs, and nobody picked up a fork.
My father stood at the head of the table where my grandfather used to sit, and he laid his big hands flat on the cloth.
"Harold," my mother said. "Not in front of them."
"In front of them," he said. "That's the only place it counts."
He turned to the executor.
"Have you got the forms?"
"I drew up all of them this afternoon." The executor took a stack of papers from the briefcase. "In case."
"Good."
My father picked up a pen.
"First," he said. "Ellingwood Lumber. I'm resigning as president, as of tonight. The shares in my name go to Calvin along with the ones from my grandfather."
"Dad," I said.
"You can fire me. You can keep me. That's yours to decide, and I'll wait for you to decide it."
He signed the first page.
His signature was steady. I had never seen him sign anything that fast.
"Second. The Subaru." He signed again. "It has Calvin's name on the title and Natasha's hands on the wheel. I'm signing that she took it without his leave, and he can sell it or drive it to the county dump."
A few people laughed. It was a thin, shaky laugh.
"Third. The thirty-eight thousand two hundred dollars Monique took from his joint account." My father lifted his head. "I'm paying that back out of my own savings. Mr. Executor, you'll see he has a cashier's check by Monday."
"It will be done."
"And fourth." His voice thickened. "A statement. To the county prosecutor. That I knew about the certificates for thirty years. That I signed the order against my son because my wife told me to. That I'd like my name on every page that has hers."
