Chapter 16: Stripped
We dropped behind the third cask, and Sebastian pulled his coat over both of us.
The lantern came down the row, slow, swinging.
I held my breath.
The boots stopped three feet from my head.
A gruff voice muttered, "Rats," and the boots turned and went away.
We stayed folded together in the dark until the stairs creaked, the door shut, and the key turned.
Then Sebastian gave a quiet, breathless laugh.
"Your hair is full of cobwebs," he said.
"So is yours."
We both laughed until we had to cover our mouths.
At five in the morning, Fourth Company stood in formation on the frozen parade ground.
The Commandant stood in front of us with a sheet of paper in her hand.
Sebastian stood to the left of her at attention in full dress grey.
I was in the second rank, with Poppy at my elbow.
The Commandant did not look at him.
"By interim order of the Blood Council," she read, in a voice with no color in it, "Major Sebastian Rook is relieved of command of Fourth Company, pending the hearing."
