Chapter 15: What Aldo Did
New Cathedral cemetery was gray and wet on Sunday morning, with fallen leaves stuck flat to the paths.
Katia parked her dented hatchback by the iron gate and cut the engine.
"I'm coming with you," she said.
"You're staying in the car."
"I'm coming to the edge. I'll stand behind a tree like a normal person."
She was wearing her pajama pants under her coat, and her red hair stuck out in three directions.
I had slept two hours on her floor with the black dress in a heap beside me.
Nero had been called to Albemarle Street at seven.
His father's men had come to the loft for him, politely, with their hats in their hands.
He had kissed me hard on the landing and told me to stay out of the Bellandi part of the city.
I had waited ten minutes, and then I knocked on Katia's door.
The stone was in the old Italian section, under a cedar.
It was plain gray granite, polished on the front, with a name I read once and kept to myself.
Under it were two dates.
The man had been twenty-nine.
Standing at the foot of it, in an overcoat, with his hat in his hand, was Don Aldo.
