Chapter 10: The Pen

The rehab center's administrator called at three that afternoon.

Gwen and I were still in the courthouse parking lot, and I put the phone on speaker.

"Mrs. Kincaid, I'm sorry to trouble you," he said. "A concern has been raised about your mother's placement. Her bed is under review pending a billing audit, and I'm required to tell you that she may be moved."

My mouth went dry.

"Who raised it?"

"I'm not able to say."

"I can," Gwen said.

I hung up and looked at the courthouse steps.

Calvin was just coming down them with his folder, and he stopped when he saw my face.

"Tell me," he said.

I told him in four sentences.

He did not say anything for a moment, and then he took out his own phone.

"I'm not going to drive you," he said. "I'll meet you there. Is that within my rule?"

"I think it is," I said.

"Then I'll be ten minutes behind you."

The administrator's office smelled of coffee and floor polish, and he sat behind a desk with a green blotter.

Calvin walked in without knocking and put a card on the blotter.

"I'm the Kincaid family's attorney," he said. "I manage the Kincaid Family Foundation, which is this center's largest donor. Mr. Russell Kincaid sits on its board, but its checks are signed by my office."

The administrator straightened.

"We value that relationship."

"Good. Does a single board member have any power over who is treated here?"
