Chapter 21: Every Page

Miles's POV

The conference room on the second floor had a long table, a water pitcher and a clerk with a stamp.

Leigh sat on one side with her lawyer.

Ellis waited in the hall outside, because she had asked him to.

I sat on the other side with the thick folder I had carried in from the steps.

It held nothing but the agreement and a yellow pen.

The clerk slid the stack across the table to me.

It was the same weight as the one under my coffee cup in October.

I looked at the last page, and her signature was there again, with a different date.

Beside it, the uncapped pen lay pointing at my side of the table.

Leigh had put it there before I sat down.

It was the exact thing she had done the first time, and she knew I would see it.

I picked up the pen.

I did not sign.

"I'd like to read it," I said.

Leigh's lawyer glanced at the clerk.

"It's nine pages," she said.

"It's forty minutes of my morning, and it's the most important thing I've signed," I said.

"Please."

Leigh said nothing.

I turned back to the first page and began.

The clerk checked her watch twice.

The water pitcher sweated on the table.

I read the clause about the alternating weeks and the clause about the school.

I read the paragraph that said Leigh took nothing from the house, not one dollar of its value, and the paragraph that said she would not be asked to repay anything for the years she had kept it running.
